We are very sad to report that William Biers, Professor Emeritus of Greek Art and Archaeology, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 12. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University, and his Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Biers was a specialist in Greek archaeology and ceramics (especially “plastic” vases), and in ancient technologies. Throughout his career, Professor Biers played an active role in the Archaeological Institute of America, serving as president of the Missouri Society as well as serving on many committees and boards. Many of us will always remember his deep love of Greece, ancient pottery, and especially komast vases. He shaped the same appreciation in the many students who passed through the Department of Art History and Archaeology.
Memorial information will be posted here when available. For now, Jane Biers has asked that we honor Bill by making donations to the Alzheimer’s Association. The local chapter is the Greater Missouri Chapter, 9370 Olive Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63123-3258; the Columbia office is located at 2400 Bluff Creek Dr., 65201.
