ICS publishes Luitpold Wallach's edition of Alcuin's LIbri Carolini

We are very proud to announce the publication of Luitpold Wallach's critical edition of the Libri Carolini  as a special issue of Illinois Classical Studies (Vol.42.2 Fall 2017). Luitpold Wallach served as a faculty member in the Department of Classics at the University of Illinois from 1967-1978.  Barbara Wallach and Antony Augoustakis co-edited his unfinished edition of the first two books of the Alcuin's Libri Carolini, a protest from the Frankish kingdom of Charlemagne to the Seventh Ecumenical Council of Nicaea of 787.  As they explain in the preface: "Charlemagne and his court oppose the worship of icons as idolatry, and the rift between the two parts of the empire, East and West, begins to become irreparable afterwards."
